Renting a Cuba car and being able to visit the island to discover the most fascinating places is an experience that we definitely recommend. It is important to travel informed in order to live an unforgettable experience in the Caribbean.
Here is a list of tips that Cubacenter has prepared for you in order to drive in Cuba without any problem:
Although there is not much traffic in Cuba, driving is not always easy. The road network is in good condition although in some places you may find holes. We recommend driving with caution and avoid the night as often the roads are poorly lit or not illuminated.
Frequent refuelling is recommended as there are few fuel distribution centres on the island.
It is strongly recommended that you keep a copy of the contract on your return, which will be issued to you when you pick up your car.
The maximum speed allowed in Cuba is 100 km per hour and on secondary roads you must not exceed 50 km per hour. If the limit is exceeded, you may receive a fine which will be processed by the rental company and charged to your account. Never pay a police officer in cash.
Traffic signs in Cuba are not well organised and, especially outside tourist destinations, signs are often missing. We recommend that you download the offline maps before your arrival in Cuba so that you can use them during the trip without an internet connection. If you find yourself having to ask for information from a local person, remember that they will often not speak your language; we therefore provide you a little help in order to understand the indication that you will be given:
right: derecho
left: izquierda
straight: recto
go straight: siga recto/todo recto
district: square
turn: Doblar
stop: pare
When you pick up your car at the rental office you will be informed about the service stations. Remember that petrol must be paid in CUC as credit cards are often not accepted for fuel payments.
For any breakdown of the car during the rental period or any type of problem, contact the 24-hour emergency call centre at the number indicated on the rental agreement.
