Cuba is an island in the Caribbean, located at the entrance of the Gulf of Mexico. This territory comprises the Greater Antilles; and it is undoubtedly a favorite place for potential visitors from different latitudes. To visit this beautiful Caribbean island there are two ways to travel, the first is by air and the second is by sea. If you want to know in detail how to get to Cuba, we invite you to read on.

What is the best means of transportation to go to Cuba?

Cuba has 10 international airports located in different tourist destinations throughout the archipelago; which allow contact with the main territories through various airlines. Therefore, the main and most comfortable way to get to Cuba is by plane, since there are regular flights departing from the main cities in the world.

The vast majority of visitors traveling to Cuba pass through Havana's José Martí International Airport; and this is due to the fact that it is the main airport in the country. In addition, it is important to note that there are no regular buses or trains between the airport and the city center. That is why the most usual way to get there is by cab, although these take between 30 to 40 minutes to reach their destination.

Cuba also has other international airports apart from the one named above, these airports are the following:

  • Vitalio Acuña - Cayo Largo, La Juventud Island.
  • Antonio Maceo - Santiago de Cuba.
  • Juan Gualberto Gómez - Matanzas.
  • Ignacio Agramonte - Camagüey.
  • Frank País - Holguín.
  • Abel Santamaría - Santa Clara, Villa Clara.
  • Sierra Maestra - Manzanillo, Granma.
  • Jardines del Rey - Cayo Coco, Ciego de Ávila.
  • Jaime González - Cienfuegos.

The second way to get to Cuba is through the ports. Most of them have good transportation connections with the city center, so getting to the hotel will be very easy. The island has four cruise terminals, which are:

  • Avenida del Puerto - Havana.
  • Punta Francés - La Juventud Island.
  • Jesús Menéndez Avenue - Santiago de Cuba.
  • La Mar Street - Cienfuegos.

In addition, it has fifteen international marinas, or so-called strategic points for tourist attractions. Small and medium-sized vessels can anchor there, to observe nautical events and attractions of interest to visitors. It is essential to mention that at all the main arrival points to the territory, whether airports or seaports, you will find customs agents.

What should I do to go to Cuba?

If you want to travel to Cuba you must carry out some formalities, such as the advance traveler information. The advance traveler information is a process that greatly improves and facilitates the tourist's experience in their transit through the Cuban island; and while that happens this department is responsible for providing advance information to expedite procedures at various points of entry.

Each passenger is obliged to complete the information provided truthfully to the Identity Administration, as well as to Migration and Alien Affairs, the General Directorate of Customs of the Republic and the Ministry of Health.

In addition, to visit Cuba for tourism or leisure purposes, visitors must coordinate their trip according to a tourism program negotiated with international agencies. These agencies must have an agreement with the Ministry of Tourism of Cuba (MINTUR) and obtain a visa through a tourism agent to book a trip.

You can also contact the Cuban consular offices at your country's embassy. Another option is to do so at the Cuban representative offices in places where there are no embassies.
